Ｂ群第1位「ヤケイ」特集

　高崎山自然動物園には、Ｂ群677頭、Ｃ群362頭の天然記念物のニホンザルがいて、ヤケイは2012年7月に生まれた、現在9才になるＢ群のメスザルです。

尻尾を上げるヤケイ

　今年の2月の終わり頃から、Ｂ群第2位のオスザル「マクレーン」からしきりにプロポーズを受けていましたが、マクレーンをバックにつけたことで威張り始めたヤケイは、3月15日に、Ｂ群メスザル第1位で、ヤケイの母親でもある「ビケイ」とケンカになり、若さと体力でビケイを倒してＢ群メスザル第1位となりました。
　4月頃からは、木ゆすりや尻尾を挙げて歩くなど、群れの上位のオスザルが見せるような行動をするようになり、群れの7位以下のオスザルが道をあけるほど怖がられる存在となりました。
　5月には、5位や4位のオスザルたちもヤケイを恐れるようになる中で、3位の「ゴエモン」がヤケイの振舞いに抵抗したところ、ヤケイは、ゴエモンを背後から襲うなど徹底的に攻撃したため、ゴエモンも怖がって逃げるようになりました。
　この頃には、以前、熱烈にプロポーズしていた第2位の「マクレーン」も、ヤケイの姿を見ると恐れおののいて逃げるようになっていました。きっと彼女の本性を見てしまったからに違いありません。
　こうしたことから、6月以降、オスザル第1位の「ナンチュウ」と「ヤケイ」の関係を注視していたところ、6月26日、サル寄せ場でヤケイに咬みつかれた子ザルをナンチュウが助けに行くということがあり、このときヤケイは持ち前の腕力で逆にナンチュウをねじ伏せ、ナンチュウは悲鳴を上げながら逃げ回るという事件が起きました。

　この事件以降、私たちは1ヵ月間にわたってナンチュウとヤケイの優位関係を慎重に観察し続けたところ、ヤケイがナンチュウよりも優位であることを示す行動が度々見られたことから、Ｂ群の中でヤケイが最も優位な存在となったと認定し、「高崎山史上最強女子」が誕生することとなりました。

　通常、ニホンザルは、群れの中でオスザルとメスザルは別々の社会を作り、群れ全体の第1位はオスザルの第1位がなっていました。
　今回、メスザルである「ヤケイ」がＢ群の第1位になったことは、高崎山自然動物園の70年近い歴史の中でも初めてのことであり、自然界においても大変珍しい出来事であることから、今後ヤケイや周りのオスザルたちがどういう行動を見せてくれるのか、ナンチュウの復権はあるのか、私たち職員もワクワクしながら興味深く観察を続けていきたいと思っているところです。

There exists a large number of macaque monkeys (natural monument) in Takasakiyama zoological garden, Oita City, Japan. There are 677 in troop B and 362 in troop C. Yakei is nine-year-old female monkey that was born in July 2012, and now she reins troop B.

Yakei had been proposed many times since the end of February 2021 by McClane, the second alpha male of troop B. She gained some power because of his proposal, therefore she started act arrogant since then. On March 15, 2021, she fought against and defeated “Bikei”, her biological mother who was the first female of troop B, and took her place.

Since April, she had been walking around with her tail up, which is very rare for a female (it is a usual behavior in top males). She became a threat among other monkeys, and males under seventh of the troop gave away to her.

In May, even fourth and fifth males were threatened by Yakei, but the third “Goemon” rejected her attitude. Then, Yakei decided to attack him from his back and struck him so hard. Afterwards he ended up running away from her for fear.

By then, McClane, who had proposed Yakei many times also started to run away for fear every time he saw her. We suppose it was because he realized the true nature of Yakei.

Since June, staff paid attention carefully to the relationship between Nanchu, the alpha male, and Yakei. On June 26th, Nanchu tried to save a little monkey who was bit by Yakei at the monkey gathering place, and Yakei backfired him with her physical strength. Nanchu was running around screaming.

Since this act, we have observed Nanchu and Yakei carefully again for about a month, and we could see many behaviors that indicated Yakei was superior to Nanchu. Therefore, we certified Yakei as the top of troop B, and it became the first case of a female macaque monkey becomes the strongest in Takasakiyama history.

Normally, Japanese macaque monkeys make their difference societies depending on their sex in the Japanese macaque society, and a male macaque had always become the top of the troop.

Yakei is our first alpha female of a troop in 70-year history of Takasakiyama. It is also a rarely seen phenomenon in the simian world, and thus we are very curious and excited to see what will happen next: how all the male monkeys will react and act, will Nanchu get his thrown back, and so on.
